Through our work at Center for Green Market Activation (GMA) and ZEMBA, we know that 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 to harnessing collective ambition and driving scalable investment to decarbonize heavy transport and industry. We also know companies need clarity that the green energy and commodity certificates issued by those systems will count towards their ambitious climate targets. The draft Version 2 Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Corporate Net Zero Standard sends a clear message that they will.

Much remains to be done to finalize the draft Standard. These details matter so we will engage closely with SBTi throughout this process and encourage companies to do the same.

We don’t want to downplay this moment, however. With this draft, SBTi is sending a strong signal to companies: invest in deep decarbonization in heavy industry and transport, including through book and claim. 𝗗𝗼. 𝗡𝗼𝘁. 𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁.

In case it wasn’t clear enough, they specifically call out the example of supporting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through a book and claim approach to address scope 3 aviation emissions. This example easily translates to maritime, trucking, steel, cement, chemicals and more. 𝗦𝗕𝗧𝗶 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.
